About

A Compassionate Approach To Effective Change

My Story

Therapy is about you, but good therapy is possible only if there’s a trusting, collaborative relationship between the client and therapist. To help begin building that relationship, I’ve shared a few details about my background and how I got here.

My Background

I’m a Colorado native and grew up in Denver. This growing up happened fast, which meant involvement in less-than-ideal situations. I was fortunate, however, to have a loving and supportive mother who, despite the many challenges I presented, never waivered. I also had the benefit of the structure provided by sports and somehow found my way to the University of Missouri. My experiences as a kid and young adult drew me into the psychology department. After four years at Mizzou, I spent time in Florida working at a large psychiatric hospital before returning to complete my masters degree at the University of Colorado.

A Rocky Start

Growing up fast always has a cost, and mine showed up in the form of drugs and the legal system. When your middle name literally is “Justice” and you find yourself in front of a judge, the irony of that middle name does not always work to your advantage. However, the lessons of these life experiences are a major part of what I bring into the session. Having a therapist who can empathize with painful life experiences is expected, but this is a bare minimum requirement. My clients have found it to be an advantage that my education and approach are not limited to learning done through books, classes, and lectures.

How I Got Here

Every newly minted therapist doubts whether they are qualified for the job (and we should doubt it), and I spent the first 19 years of my career working in hospitals and mental health agencies before going into private practice in 2011. I’ve worked at all levels of the mental health continuum; locked psychiatric residential, transitional residential, independent living for youth removed from the home, foster care, intensive outpatient, and standard outpatient treatment. I was lucky to have been mentored by three people who were master clinicians, and each showed me what it means to do this work, what a therapist is, and what a therapist isn’t.

Experience Matters

I’ve been in practice for 31 years and have extensive experience working with teens/adolescents, addiction, anxiety treatment, trauma/emdr, couples/marital therapy, and family therapy.

LPC, LAC

I’m a Denver native and have been working in the mental health treatment field since 1992. From locked forensic psychiatric facilities to private practice, I’ve worked at all levels of the treatment continuum. Prior to moving into private practice, I was the Executive Director of a large agency that served at-risk youth and their families. After 13 years in the nonprofit world, I now have the privilege of working with a variety of people in my private practice in Downtown Littleton.

One of my favorite memories is watching Rick Upchurch return a punt for a touchdown against the Chiefs in the true Mile High Stadium in 1976. Since then, I’ve been with the Broncos through all five Super Bowl losses and all three glorious wins. I ride my longboard and backpack as often as possible, have made it up and down 36 of Colorado’s 14ers, and spend as much time as I can pretending I can draw and paint. Outside of that, I stay busy keeping my life boring. I also have the most beautiful wife in all of Colorado who has put up with me for over 20 years.
